What is polyurea polyaspartic?

Description

Polyaspartic polyurea is a member of the polyurea family and represents its third generation. Evolving over the years, polyurea technology has witnessed the advent of aromatic spray polyurea (first generation), aliphatic spray polyurea (second generation), and now, polyaspartic ester polyurea.

Introduction to Aspartic Ester

Aspartic ester, a groundbreaking aliphatic series, is characterized by its slow-reactive, high-performance, and eco-friendly attributes. First introduced by Bayer in 1990 as a reactive diluent for polyurethane coatings to reduce VOCs, it has found applications in heavy-duty, waterproof, and wear-resistant flooring among other high-end domains.

Polyurea coatings adopt a one-time coating process. It is also a dust-free polyurea coating with strong adhesion, friction resistance, and hardness. No matter how large the area is, there is no joint.

Benefits of Polyaspartic Polyurea Coatings

Polyurea coatings offer remarkable durability, versatility, and efficiency across various applications. Below are the key attributes that make these coatings stand out:

Durability & Longevity

  • Anti-Corrosion: Polyurea coatings excel in both atmospheric and marine environments, with an anti-corrosion lifespan often exceeding 10 to 15 years.
  • Chemical Resistance: Remarkable protection against corrosive agents such as acids, alkalis, salts, and solvents for over five years.

Physical Characteristics

  • Thick Film: A distinguishing feature with dry film thickness often ranging from 200 to 2,000 micrometers, far exceeding traditional anti-corrosion coatings.
  • Strong Adhesion: Exceptional bonding with substrates, achieved through chemical and even covalent chain bonding.

Composition & Interface

  • Chemical Components: The presence of hydroxyl groups (-OH) allows for robust adhesion to metal substrates.
  • Nanomaterials: Inclusion of metal oxide nanomaterials and rare-earth oxide ultrafine powders enhances interfacial transition layers.

Efficiency & Application

  • Rapid Curing: Allows for room-temperature self-curing, requiring only 15 minutes for surface drying and two hours for full curing.
  • Application Conditions: Efficient application at 20°C and below 85% relative humidity.

Versatility & Compatibility

  • Multiple Uses: Can serve as standalone inorganic polymer anti-corrosion coatings or as base layers for other organic paints.
  • Compatible Topcoats: Works well with epoxy, acrylic, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, and asphalt coatings.

Additional Features

  • Self-Repairing: Has the ability to self-heal minor scratches and damages.
  • Welding Compatibility: Does not compromise the quality of welding processes.

Is Polyurea the same as Polyaspartic?

Polyurea is a thick, clear polyester coating. This will dry out quickly and become brittle. Polyurea is closely related to aromatic polyurethanes. When applied to concrete floors, the surface looks like glass—making it a popular choice for garage floors that require a high gloss finish. However, it can dry quickly if the floor installer needs more time to disperse or level the coating over the entire floor evenly.

Adding a flexible aliphatic compound to polyurea produces polyaspartic acid, further delaying the curing process. This way, installers who want to apply a coating design such as chip, vinyl flake, or stain can add it together. In addition, it helps the coating to disperse on top.

Is Polyaspartic Better Than Polyurethane?

Comparison of properties between feiyang polyaspartic and polyurethane:

Property Polyaspartic polyurea Polyurethane
Environmental property Environmental friendly, construction solid content 70%-100% Poor environmental protection, construction solid content 30%-40%
Reaction speed curing Curing time adjustive, 20min-4h, typically cure above -15℃ Low reaction speed, request curing temperature above -5℃, curing time more than 24h in normal temperature adhesion
Adhesion with substrate Don’t need primer, the adhesion with carbon steel substrate is beyond 14Mpa, the bonding with concrete reach 4.5Mpa. Need primer, adhesion with carbon steel substrate less than 8MPa, adhesion with concrete is 2.5 Mpa
Weather resistance QUVA test space 4000h QUVA test is 1000h at most film-film
Film thickness one One time construction film 50μm—1mm One time construction film 50μm—100μm
Mechanical properties Rigidity hardness 2H, elongation 400%, tensile strength 25MP Rigidity hardness 2H, elongation 400%, tensile strength 3MPa
Construction Multiple construction method, get rid of the restriction of specified equipment same Same as aspartic polyurea.

Is Polyaspartic Better Than Epoxy?

Comparison of properties between feiyang polyaspartic and epoxy:

Polyaspartic Epoxy
Insensitive to temperature changes. Standard construction can occur under -15 ℃ -40 ℃, humidity ≤ 85%, and rapid drying (30min-5h). Low-temperature construction is complex, and heating and other means are required to assist the structure. Solidifying at low temperatures (more than 48h) is challenging.
Good color retention and UV resistance, no discoloration or chalking after 15 years of outdoor use Poor color retention and UV resistance, easy to crack, warp, and delamination
The rigidity and elasticity are adjustable. The rigid material has not only good hardness but also has a certain flexibility. Only tough coatings can be prepared and have poor flexibility
Excellent wear resistance and impact resistance or poor Poor impact resistance and wear resistance are easy to delaminate under a slight change of external force.

How Long Does Polyaspartic Last?

Polyaspartic coatings boast an adjustable curing time, ranging from 20 minutes to 4 hours, and remain stable even at temperatures as low as -15℃. With exceptional color retention and UV resistance, these coatings can last outdoors without discoloration or chalking for up to 15 years.

In summary, aspartic polyurea coatings offer a myriad of benefits including eco-friendliness, durability, and versatility, making them a strong contender in the coatings industry.
