What Are Polyaspartic and Polyurea Coatings?

Aspartic polyurea belongs to polyurea and is the third generation of polyurea. After years of development, polyurea has developed aromatic spray polyurea (first generation), aliphatic spray polyurea (second generation), and polyaspartic ester polyurea (third generation).


Aspartic ester is a new type of aliphatic series, slow reaction, high property, environmentally friendly coating material; it was first applied by Bayer in 1990 as polyurethane coating reactive diluent to lower the VOC. It is mainly used in heavy-duty, waterproof, wear-resisting floors and other high-end fields. The reaction mechanism is as follows,

Features of Polyaspartic

  1. High solids and low viscosity can be made into environmental protection coatings with high solids and low viscosity (construction solids up to 100%).
  2. The coating film has excellent fullness, leveling performance, and gloss.

Usage of Polyaspartic

  1. It can be widely used in automotive paint, improving the paint film's fullness, gloss, and hardness and speeding up drying.
  2. It Can be widely used in high-grade industrial and wood paint, especially for occasions requiring high hardness and wear resistance.
  3. Can be used in steel structures, petroleum pipelines, and other anti-corrosion coatings topcoat.
  4. Can be used to formulate high-grade solid wood glaze.
  5. Fan blade coatings include fan blade gel coatings, putty, and topcoat.
  6. The resin's 100% solid content, low viscosity, good wettability, and comprehensive c, compatibility can be widely used to grind high-consistency refining, especially suitable for automobile refinishing. (The white slurry ground with this resin can reach 100% solids, and the content of titanium dioxide can reach about 70%; it is very suitable for grinding high pigment carbon black, and the blackness is better than that of acrylics).

Polyurea coatings adopt a one-time coating process. It is also a dust-free polyurea coating with strong adhesion, friction resistance, and hardness. No matter how large the area is, there is no joint.

Benefits of Polyurea Polyaspartic Coatings

  1. Polyurea coatings can be used under harsh conditions and have a long anti-corrosion life in the atmosphere and marine; polyurea coatings generally can be used for more than 10 or 15 years. Polyurea coatings can be used for over five years, even in acid, alkali, salt, and solvent media.

The relative humidity is less than 85%, the surface drying is 15min, and the actual drying is two h, which can ensure high-efficiency construction and can realize excellent salt spray resistance and aging resistance. Polyurea coating has self-repairing properties; the local scratches caused by external force can still be protected, the layer is not damaged by cutting and welding, and welding with coating does not affect the welding quality.
  5. Polyurea coating is flexible in use; inorganic polymer anti-corrosion coating can be used alone or as a low layer of anti-corrosion coating and organic paint, single-layer inorganic polymer anti-corrosion coating as a primer can be used with epoxy, acrylic, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, asphalt, and other topcoats.
  6. Objects exposed to the atmosphere are subject to erosion by oxygen, moisture, etc., causing damage phenomena such as metal rusting, wood decay, and cement weathering. Coating the object's surface with polyurea material to form a protective film can stop or delay the occurrence and development of these destructive phenomena and prolong the service life of various materials.

Is Polyurea the same as Polyaspartic?

Polyurea is a thick, clear polyester coating. This will dry out quickly and become brittle. Polyurea is closely related to aromatic polyurethanes. When applied to concrete floors, the surface looks like glass—making it a popular choice for garage floors that require a high gloss finish. However, it can dry quickly if the floor installer needs more time to disperse or level the coating over the entire floor evenly.

Adding a flexible aliphatic compound to polyurea produces polyaspartic acid, further delaying the curing process. This way, installers who want to apply a coating design such as chip, vinyl flake, or stain can add it together. In addition, it helps the coating to disperse on top.

Is Polyaspartic Better Than Epoxy?
