Best Materials for Cold Storage Flooring

Cold storage units are climate-controlled facilities used for storing food, dairy, meat, seafood, etc. Currently, China ranks third globally in cold storage capacity, behind India and the United States.

Cold storages are categorized into low-temperature, medium-temperature, high-temperature, quick-freeze, and controlled atmosphere storages. The primary market is low-temperature storage, accounting for 72%, mainly for food storage at -18 to -25°C, ideal for meat and vaccines. The unique environment of cold storages demands high-quality flooring materials, which must withstand prolonged low temperatures and endure the impact and pressure from forklifts during loading and unloading. Therefore, materials need excellent low-temperature resistance and impact durability.

Common Solutions for Cold Storage Flooring and Their Issues:

Option 1: Steel shot with sealing hardener for a dense surface, preventing water infiltration.

Option 2: Water-based polyurethane mortar. Excellent in preventing freeze-cracking and water seepage.

  1. Being a rigid system, it is less effective against cracking. Normally, the flooring performs well, but local cracking can allow ice water to seep in, causing expansion and concrete damage.
  2. Low-temperature conditions hinder or slow the chemical reaction, necessitating shutdowns for maintenance, thus increasing costs.
  3. Mechanical properties weaken in low temperatures, reducing lifespan.

For cold storage flooring solutions, polyaspartic polyurea (Feiyang) offers natural advantages. It is suitable for both new flooring projects and renovation of old, damaged floors:

  1. Polyaspartic polyurea exhibits excellent low-temperature reactivity and durability, allowing for maintenance without shutdowns, thereby reducing costs and offering high cost-effectiveness.
  2. Its elastic system features high strength (≥10MPa) and high elongation (≥200%), making it wear-resistant and capable of bearing heavy loads.
  3. Maintains crack resistance in low temperatures. The paint film is dense and waterproof, preventing water infiltration and consequent concrete expansion and cracking.
  4. Aesthetically pleasing, inert material, resistant to bacteria and dirt.
